DIY (Do it Yourself) Guide to Effective Community Outreach

Seminar duration: 1-2 Hours

You can make a difference because everyone deserves a future they can smile about. If you are wondering how and where to start your outreach event, we will share best practices to running an effective event and review resources available to improve whole mouth health. When you see someone smile, what do you do? You smile back. And doesn’t that feel good. Millions of Americans are not smiling because they do not have awareness of dental care and prevention, the financial wealth to pay for treatment, access to care facilities or they have cultural and language barriers.

As health care professionals, we have the knowledge and ability to help those in our communities. Some would argue that we have an obligation to play an integral role in educating the public about their oral health.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the prevalence of oral disease as it relates to socioeconomic status, cultural beliefs and access to care
  • Discuss the importance of community outreach in oral health education
  • Create an outreach event from identifying the target population, the venue, oral health goals and the mechanism to achieve those goals
  • Identify resources to assist in outreach events
